Fire extinguishers require an extended service every five years. This process involves fully discharging the extinguisher, inspecting for internal corrosion, refilling, and re-pressurising the unit.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers require an overhaul service every 10 years, which includes a hydrostatic pressure test to ensure compliance with pressure vessel regulations, along with a replacement valve.
Due to the complexity of this procedure, many service engineers offer a refurbished 'service exchange' unit instead. In some cases, replacing the extinguisher entirely can be a more cost-effective option.
